Hi students! In the library, books are organized two different ways. Fiction and Everybody books are ordered alphabetically by the author’s last name. NonFiction books are organized by call number using the Dewey Decimal System.
The Dewey Decimal System was created by Melvil Dewey in 1876. It is based upon numbers that are determined by category.
Some of the numbers are decimals which means they include fractions of a whole number. For example: 503.98 = 503 98/100. Fractions can be tricky. Which number comes first? 503.10 or 503.01?
You can practice shelf order using the online game Shelver! from Mrs. Lodge’s Library.
